Outstanding Import and Export Enterprise Awards 2019 commends outstanding performers

An award ceremony and dinner banquet for the 6th Outstanding Import and Export Enterprise Awards of the Hong Kong Chinese Importers’ and Exporters’ Association (HKCIEA) was held at the convention hall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 3 October 2019. Mr Paul Chan Mo-po, Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and Chen Dong, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Hong Kong, were invited to be the guests. Members of the industry enthusiastically participated in the event. A total of 14 enterprises won awards this year, and three organisations bagged the Outstanding Import and Export Industry Partner Award.

The award has two categories: Outstanding Import and Export Enterprise and Outstanding Import and Export Industry Partner. There are different awards under the two categories to commend import-export companies that have outstanding performances in different aspects. These include the Market Development Excellence Award, the Corporate Succession Excellence Award, the Corporate Achievement Award, the Entrepreneurship Award, the E-Commerce Award and the Innovation Excellence Award.

The panel of judges this year consisted of 13 leaders from the political, business, academic and technology communities, and was chaired by Dr. Bernard Chan Pak-li, Under Secretary for the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau. Participating enterprises had to go through a preliminary selection process and a rigorous interview procedure. Subsequently, the professional panel of judges ranked them and picked the outstanding ones.

Paul Chan, Financial Secretary, Chen Dong, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office, Bernard Chan Pak-li, Under Secretary for the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, Phoebe Tse Siu-ling, General Manager of the Commercial Banking Department of the Bank of China (Hong Kong), which was a gold sponsor of the event, Lam Lung-on, HKCIEA President, Wong Ting-kwong, a legislator (import-export sector) and Honorary President of the Organising Committee of the awards, Dr. Kennedy Wong Ying-ho, President of the Organising Committee, and Chan King, HKCIEA Vice President and Honorary Secretary, hosted the ceremony. Zhu Wen, Director General of the Coordination Department of the Liaison Office, and Liu Yajun, head of the Commercial Office of the Economic Affairs Department of the Liaison Office, were invited to the event and joined the group photo-taking session.

In his welcome speech of the ceremony, Wong Ting-kwong, a legislator representing the import-export sector and Honorary President of the Organising Committee of the awards, pointed out that worsening trade conflicts between China and the US during the year have undermined the global economic outlook and investment sentiments. With economic growth in Hong Kong slowing down, the business environment is fraught with challenges. Yet he encouraged the industry to work in concert and stay resilient amid the turmoil.

In his speech, Financial Secretary Paul Chan pointed out that trade has always been the bedrock of the Hong Kong economy, and the import-export sector has played the most significant role in propelling the city to be the world’s seventh largest trading entity in merchandise trade. The achievements we see today are the results of the years-long hard work of the industry. Chan thanked HKCIEA for connecting different players of the industry and helping to promote economic and trade ties between Hong Kong and different places.

Kennedy Wong, President of the Organising Committee, delivered a speech thanking the Selection Committee for its hard work and the industry for supporting the Outstanding Import and Export Enterprise Awards. He said HKCIEA will continue to work hard with others to foster growth of the import-export sector.
